About Dirk

Thank you for taking the time to visit my website. I hope it provides you with insight into my background and philosophy as a counselor.  Over the past 30 years, I have worked as a therapist in community agencies, public and prep schools, and in private practice. My office is in Bozeman, Montana, where I work with older children, adolescents, and young adults.

As you can imagine, most teenagers don’t ask their parents if they can talk with a counselor, even if they are struggling. The idea of meeting with someone they don’t know and openly sharing what’s bothering them can seem overwhelming.  They sometimes have friends to talk with, or family members who can provide support and guidance. Oftentimes, though, there is something profound and extremely helpful about having a person - a counselor - whose primary mission is to help make your child’s life better, happier and more fulfilling. Indeed, youth seem to realize this quickly.

It’s rare for children and adolescents to initiate counseling, yet it most often becomes their decision to continue the process. If a teenager doesn’t think counseling has value after a period of time, it probably is not the right time or the right fit. Nearly all of the adolescents I work with quickly realize the value of an experienced counselor dedicated to helping them succeed. I’m typically able to encourage them to make the necessary changes for their lives to be better. Giving them the “courage” to try a different and better path is the crux of counseling and the key to sustained improvement.
